How to make your resolutions last

Instead of changing many different things at once, make a small change and when you’re comfortable with that change, move on to the next small change. Notice small improvements & bask in your inner appreciation. Your confidence will increase. If there’s one or two slip ups, cut yourself some slack. Stay positive and get back on track. Also, have resolutions reminders. Then you’ll be less likely to stray from them!

Your Life’s Work

Do you work in order to live, or live in order to work? Isn’t there more to life than work? What about your passion in life? Have you given it a high priority and made the time to follow your passion? Make sure you do! If you don’t take action now - then when?

PLUG – IN

With this one thought - I am being of peace, the mind will unplug itself from external negative sockets and plug into the inner self. I am Peace.

Stop being a Projector

Just as a projector enlarges everything, in the same way, we too can blow things out of proportion and throw it out there as a reaction. So, stop the projection. Remind yourself that nothing is really as big as it seems. Put things into perspective. And nip the “little things” in the bud before they become big.

Maintain the balance of responding to situations with a cool head and to people with a warm heart.

A 'THIS WORKS' LIST

Happy New Year! To help you keep your resolution, make a 'This Works' list. A list of strategies you know work for you, things that will support your resolution.

For example, if your resolution is to get healthier, your 'This Works' list may include:
- a 10 minute walk or exercise at lunch time
- drinking water instead of a sugary drink
- replacing unhealthy snacks with healthier alternatives

And like a toolkit, keep your 'This Works' list with you. Then, whenever you're struggling to keep your resolution, you can use one of the strategies from your list.

SMALL THINGS MATTER

Often we use our voice for big issues, but what about the small things? Do you speak up about the small issues?

Well, small things do matter, so do speak up. Otherwise it tends to build up into bigger issues!

Just remember to choose when to speak up and how, otherwise you'll come across as confrontational or a complainer!

Whole Hearted Smile

Smile. A smile from the heart is the best accessory you can wear.

So if you're not smiling from the heart - why not? What's stopping your heart reaching your face?

Add that warm, wholehearted smile to your appearance and it will make you feel good, look good, and do good!

THINK LIKE PLASTICINE

"I can't do this." "I shouldn't have." Get stuck in self critical and cynical thinking, and it's easy to 'harden and dry up.'

Instead, think like plasticine! Make your thinking flexible. Then you can remould your thoughts into optimism and self encouragement.

CURB APPROVAL SEEKING

There's no doubt that we enjoy people's approval; it does motivate us. But seeking out approval, a little too often is not healthy! Especially when our sense of self-worth is dependent on others' approval.

To curb the need for approval:
1) Understand that it's not anyone else's job to give you approval. It's your job!
2) Give yourself the approval that you seek.

Embrace All Ideas

When ideas are presented to you, do you reject them just because you’re uncomfortable with them? Why not, try being open to new ideas and see how they work. The result just may be amazing.

Find Your Inner Tortoise

What a speedy world! It’s exhilarating, but whenever things are getting on top of you, stop what you’re doing. Like a tortoise, withdraw into your shell, centre yourself and experience your natural pace. Refresh yourself and then get back into the day.

Emotions in the Workplace

From frustration to frenzy, tears to tantrums, our emotions impact our performance & reputation at work. Identify which emotions are appropriate in the workplace, & when it's OK to express & when to rein it in. Get better at regulating your emotions & you'll handle situations more professionally. Then your emotions will range from cheerful to creative, energetic to empathetic!

Sitting Still

Very few of us can sit still. Sit, yes. Still, not so easy. Still, sit for a few minutes every day or even once in a while.

Let all the restlessness and discomfort dissolve, and become quiet in such a way, that there's no need to flex your fingers, tap your feet, straighten your back, or adjust your neck and shoulders.

As you become absolutely still, your mind will quieten and ease into stillness.

Proud Like a Peacock

We all have talents & skills, & when we use them they're like a peacock's feathers on full display. Be proud, but watch out for confidence turning into arrogance. Otherwise we end up being like a showy peacock. So celebrate your talents & skills but keep yourself grounded by remembering that just like a peacock's ugly feet, there's always something about ourselves that we can improve!

Spending Habits

Right about now is a good time to increase our spending awareness, even if we have things under control. It can only improve our financial well-being!

So before you spend, ask yourself: Is this the best use of my money? Do I really need or use this? Would something less expensive make me just as happy?

Rethink your spending habits, not to cut out the fun from life, but to redirect your spending from things that are not important to things that are important.

People tend to forget that shopping is an addiction, in and of itself. Some shop just for the sake of shopping.

Being a hoarder and not wanting to let go of anything, is also part of our dis-ease.

Shopping just because, whether we need it or not is good, it depends on whether you spend money that is better spent elsewhere or needs to be spent on bills, rent, food, etc.

It is like gambling, believing God will supply when it has nothing to do with Him, especially if you didn't take Him shopping with you.

I had a friend addicted to Nevada Tickets, she had 5 children and spent her grocery money.

That old saying, 'Robbing Peter to pay Paul,' means you make partial payments so you can use more.

Curious Learner

Curiosity prompts us to keep learning. So be curious and keep educating yourself!
Ask questions and turn your questions into a quest. Look things up. Google your problems. Search at the library. Learn from those around you.

How do you keep your curiosity muscles pumped up?

The Seed of Life

We are like a tree, and our branches represent work, family, friends, health, dreams, ambitions.... Our life-force pulses through each branch to every single leaf. So, extend your branches in a joyful gesture and celebrate life. The seed is the essence of who you are; your life-force. If you feel overwhelmed by it all, concentrate on the seed and you’ll be revitalized. When the seed is vibrant and vitalized, the tree, the branches, the leaves, everything will be good.

Overcome Procrastination

Procrastination not only wastes our time, it also causes anxiety. So why do we procrastinate? Why not overcome the habit! Try one of these methods: List all the things you've been putting off and then prioritize the list. Create a vision of the result and be motivated by the outcome, rather than worrying about the process. Don’t wait till you feel like doing it; the feeling will come when you get started.

The News and You

All the news that you watch, read, listen - have you ever thought about its impact on your wellbeing? This week, think about becoming more discerning and selective about what news content to absorb.

There's no need to turn off the news or tune it out, stay informed but take better control of your newsfeed. Maybe just like food and drink, news must also be consumed with an appropriate balance and moderation.

Intention with Determination

Want to make something happen? Well, an intention is a start, but it's not enough. What is required is determination - from start to finish!

To keep your determination going, regularly revise and reaffirm your commitment. Then revive and reinforce determination, with determination. Then you'll equip yourself with the enthusiasm and power to make your intentions happen.

Words of Encouragement

A word of encouragement at the right time can boost someone's confidence and courage. So don't hesitate or hold back in encouraging others.

Your encouragement doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming, simply appreciate someone's efforts, share a compliment or give uplifting feedback.

Go on, be lavish and encourage someone today. It might just energise and elevate their day.

Feel Overwhelmed?

Feeling overwhelmed? Whilst overwhelm happens to the best of us, we don't have to live in a state of overwhelm. How?

1. Challenge the belief that you are overwhelmed. Consider the possibility that you feel overwhelmed, because you think you are!

2. Ask yourself, 'How do I want to feel?' Consciously focus on feeling that way and your feelings of overwhelm will begin to dissipate.

Honor Your Past

We all have a past. And there are things that we'd like to forget, mistakes, bad decisions.... But if we choose to forget the past, we miss out on its potential. Instead, extract and take valuable lessons from those mistakes and bad decisions, and the past becomes a story of wisdom and learning. Honor what you've learned by using it to make your present and future brighter. Then you really allow the past to become the past.

Share What You Have

The best things in life are free so share what you have, freely, all without needing acknowledgement or recognition. Even if you only have a little, share it openly. You’ll feel richer for it!

Peacemaker

It’s not about winning the Nobel Peace Prize. It is about choosing to be a peacemaker and working towards a win-win solution in every situation. First, stop being at war with yourself; and when the turbulence in your mind ceases, you can begin to make peace with the world.

Less Self-Consciousness

A little bit of self-consciousness is OK, isn't it? It keeps us on our toes and best behavior. But when we're overly self-conscious, we often miss out on opportunities and having a good time.

So the next time you want to do something, but don't, because you don't want to make a fool of yourself, be a little less self-conscious. Loosen up, embrace embarrassment or awkwardness and go for it.

Sphere of Consideration

We all try our best to be considerate towards others; family, friends, or even strangers passing by. But how about expanding our sphere of consideration?

Sit quietly for 15 minutes and give thoughtful consideration to the world.

Your sphere of consideration can be specific or general; a group of people, a crisis or a global issue. Or just find a map of the world and pick a location. Send your good wishes and thoughts of peace, love and power.

Retire, Not Tire

Every night retire, rather than go to bed tired! How?

Before bedtime, make time to take a shower and wash away any weariness from your day. Do a quick mental inventory of your day and take note of small or large achievements, lessons learned and gestures that you appreciated.

Feel good about your day and now you're ready to retire to bed, restfully rather than tired!

Before You React

When someone upsets or angers us, it's so easy to react out of habit and regret it later. To break this habit, stay alert and catch yourself before you react!

Whether it's a difficult interpersonal interaction or an emotionally charged email, take a moment to choose your response and you'll come out better off.

Cloudy Situations

Do challenging situations feel like a burden that you have to endure? Do they seem to last forever?

To face challenges with more ease, think, situations are like passing clouds. These clouds gather around me at times but they're only temporary, sooner or later they will fade away.
