I really like this. How many times I took or spoke God's name in vane. How many times, I ignored His presence and chose to do things my way.

Looking back over the years, He was there. There were many times, that I should have been dead or hurt much more than I was. i.e. I was raped by one guy, there were three in the room.
I was in that situation because I listened to a person I thought was my friend instead of listening to myself.

I could really identify. I was just taking more and more, and it wasn't enough. It wasn't until I stopped to think about where I was at and reached out for help, that my life changed.

You must go within or you go without.

It was an inward journey. The longest journey they say we will ever take, from the head to the heart.

It certainly wasn't done in a fast car in overdrive, although it was tried that way, and we had lots of pile ups, and a lot of "go back to jail or home or whatever else that came along the way.

I guess, if you don't go within, the biggest thing you miss is the good orderly direction, you get lost. You have no inner knowing. So you are travelling in doubt and fear. So if you are out you have no faith and hope, so you are walking blind and have no way of knowing where you are going.

If you go within, you have fellow travellers to walk with you and you are not alone. If you look without, you get many opinions, a lot of confusion and total bedlum, leading you to confusion and and disruptive paths.

When you go within, the Light will show you the way. You are no longer fumbling around in the darkness. You are guided, and you are gently shown the way to go. I was told there is no right way or wrong way, there is only the way that is right for you.

If you are in the wrong place, the right place is empty.

This reminds me of what my spiritual adviser said to me many years ago, if you don't know, the time is not right. When the time is right, you will know.

I have been a very intuitive person for about 13 years. My friend and advisor says, if something is in your way and it is blocking you from the way you would go, did you ever think that your HP was directing your life and wanted you to go another way.

Sometimes I would see someone from recovery or someone who had been recovery and chose to go back out. When that didn't happen, I asked her how come. She said, "Did you ever think that maybe there was someone the other way and it was best for you, not to see that person or have anything to do with their energy. Who knows what is happening over there? If you pray and ask for what is in your best interest, you are guided in the way the Universe wants you to go.

When I have followed this way of thinking, I have received many blessings. For me it is those small things, that turn out to be big things like meeting an old friend as I was coming out of the market and she was going in. Her son belonged to the same group as me and she would often visit. I think I spoke more with her after I left the group than I did while I was a member.

I like the quote, because if the place is empty, that means I can make another decision, turn around and go back to where I am meant to be, even if I am late. I can fill that spot and leave the place I was in for the person who needed that space.

What a thought provoking statement? Not sure if I am right in my own summation, although I believe that the Spirit lead me to AA.

I went to AA because that was where my denial was. I always knew I was an addict. I used many things, food, men, pills, work, computers, etc. It all goes back to the old question, "Am I an addict because I am an alcoholic?" or "Am I an alcoholic because I am an addict?"

It really doesn't matter to me, what I do know is that I need to be in a 12 Step Fellowship. I went to Al-Anon periodically at first, but it became my mainstay in later years.

It doesn't matter what room you put me in, I qualify. I know I used alcohol like I used other substances, especially my relationships. My thinking was, why try to beat them when you can join them. I didn't want to wear a label I put on others, so I tried to shut out my actions under the influence of alcohol. I came to realize, "I can't match them drink for drink and be sober, even though I took them home, could walk and drive a straight line." It was all self-justification.

SOMETIMES WE HAVE TO GIVE A FRIEND A PIGGY BACK RIDE! IT'S CALLED, BEING OF SERVICE.

Service comes in many forms. For many years, I went into the jails, detox, treatment centers, senior centers, shared my story at meetings and anniversaries, and now I get to share with people around the world on the internet. What a blessing it is to be of service.

I was told to take my recovery out of the rooms of recovery and bring it into my home and into the community.

A smile goes along way. A hug gives good feelings and makes my day. I wouldn't be clean and sober today if it wasn't for service. It started early in recovery, when I could open my mouth and say, "Hi! My name is JoAnne and I am an alcoholic."

Time for Joy - Book - Quote

I am beginning to trust myself today. There is a place deep within me that tells me that I am okay and guides me along my path in recovery.

Today I know that I can get through anything that happens in this day with the help of my Higher Power.

Reflection for the Day

The first psychiatrist to recognize the work of Alcoholics Anonymous, Dr. Harry Tiebout, used many concepts of The Program in his own practice. Over many years, the doctor's study of the "conversion experience" led him to see, first, that it is the act of surrender which initiates the switch from negative to positive; second, that the positive phase is really a state of surrender which follows the act of surrender; and third, that the state of surrender, if maintained, supplies an emotional tone to all thinking and feeling that insures healthy adjustment. Am I living in a constant state of surrender?

Today I Pray

May I understand that I do not have to "unlearn" my respect for "self-reliance," that trait of character, which I heard praised so often from the time I was a tiny child. Only my understanding of the word must change. For as I come to know that "self" is part of God, that I am nothing except in His Being, there is no quarrel between self-reliance and God-reliance. May I rely upon that self, which is God's.

Surrender is such a big part of my recovery. I have to surrender my thoughts, my problems, my joys and my very being over to the God of my understanding.

It is only by surrender that I am empowered to do what I need to do for myself on a daily basis. Of myself I am nothing, but through Him, I can become all things.

I must always remain teachable, open to all things, and most importantly self-honesty. Without that, I am living illusion and grandeur of my own self-importance rather than in love and humility.

Surrender to win. Surrender does not mean giving up. It means having hope.

Having a chuckle about this. Got up at my group to speak at a three year anniversary and shared that I had just discovered that I had an ego. I was surprised because I thought it was a man thing. The look on their faces was priceless.

Found this to be interesting, especially the part about being a block to spirituality. No wonder the Big Book says we are selfish, self-centered, etc. and we need a spiritual solution.

Something important to remember is; that the will of God is always for our highest good, it is not as a stern disciplinary action, but as a joyous unfolding of love. There is no need to beg because Divine gifts are so lavish and so freely given that they almost overwhelm you. Spirit asks only that we accept its love and give it back as trust and confidence. We are asked only to cease struggling with outer conditions and look to God for all our needs to be fulfilled. Our cups shall run over as God creates abundance in every good thing for us. By committing our way to the Divine Law of Life and Affairs, we plant good thoughts in mind and as we patiently wait, right actions materialize in our lives. The Lord (Divine Law) will perfect all that concerns us. The only limit of all good in our lives is the limit of our own thought, desire and belief.

Sometimes we come across a sentence in a book or hear a comment which halts us in our tracks because it's so true. I had this feeling when I was reading Arthur Hailey's novel about life in a great hotel. I was eating lunch with a friend who shared that she disliked one of the vegetables on my plate and hadn’t eaten any since childhood. This is an old post and it has been read many times and I never posted a comment and shared my own esh with regard to it.

I was posting on my site and had the thought of how the old behaviors can creep back in today and I can still go back into them. I forget that they were the result of my disease and not of my recovery.

It doesn't matter what 'substance' or 'situation' or any old habit I haven't broken, that I use in today, I still have the old thinking, some is good, more is better.

Here we are in 2014 and the message is still true in today.

THE RIGHT ATTITUDE

Spirituality can be tough at times as it forces us to honestly confront ourselves, our warts and all, without excuses or fault finding. And once we have clearly identified what we are, then we are challenged to "move our feet" and take actions that will turn our lives around. We must be careful not to blame others for what we have done.

This can result in guilt and condemnation. However, consistent spiritual practice leads us to experience loving compassion both for ourselves and others. We can avoid condemnation and judgmental attitudes taking on an outlook that is compassionate and unconditional towards ourselves and others.

As we begin to see with this Divine vision, we will see through outer conditions to the inner perfection, goodness and Divinity of every creature. THOMAS A' KEMPIS said, "A humble knowledge of oneself is a surer road to God than a deep searching of the sciences."

Affirmative prayer is a conscious act of looking beyond appearances to recognize and reveal our connection with the One source of love, intelligence, vitality, assurance, peace, joy, and gratitude. When we know ourselves to be one with Divine Mind, all that is left is to be the good of God in our daily lives.

This is what a Zen Buddhist would call seeing into one's true nature, free of attachments - becoming the Buddha. Jesus said, "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." Once we change our inner life, our outer life will conform to it. You and I are one in Spirit, what truth we know in one place and completely believe in will manifest in another place and this is how we are joined in prayer. We might think that asking in prayer is meant that if there is anything we want and asked for God would give it to us, sort of like a spiritual Santa Claus.

Sometimes our prayers seem to be answered and other times not. It is left up to us to declare, believe and unify with the nonmaterial Divine level where what we ask for has already been granted, we need only realize it. RUMI expresses, "Come out of the circle of time/And into the circle of love."

Having been brought up in the church, I did not know what they meant by a Higher Power, a spiritual program and how it differed from my religious upbringing. This helped me to open my mind to other things, to not shut out other religions and thoughts. The program is meant to include all people. I think so often it is our attitude behind the words and actions that make the difference. As I often say, when I need an attitude adjustment, I know I need to go to a meeting.

This is a spiritual program, without that awareness, I don't think we heal, if we don't find it, it is like putting on a band aid and forgetting to heal from the inside out instead of the outside in.

This reminds me that I need to carry the message to those who come behind me. Someone took the time to share with me along my recovery road.

We never know when I word may be picked up that will help someone else along their recovery road.

Sometimes we write our own mountain. We take something small and make it into a mole hill, which in turn, can become a mountain that seem unsurpassable. We can do what I can't do alone.

THE LITTLE BLACK BUG

The little black bug climbed up into the tree
Why? Oh why did it have to be little old me?
All I did was climb up to see the world better;
But what should I see, but the leaves turned under

I may end up in buggy heaven and meet that chick
I met last week at the country store
who clicked her heels, and turned up her nose,
And got ate by the bug next door.
I can see the long legs yet,
Oh goodie! Oh goodie! Oh goodie!

This was the first poem I wrote in recovery sixteen years ago. It is so negative, and portrays a perfect picture of my attitude back then. Always expecting the worst, full of doom and gloom. If you live in the negative, you draw it to you.

I am so grateful that I don't have to go there anymore. I have heard several people say, "If you look at the worst scenario, then whatever happens, you will be prepared and then you can be grateful that it wasn't as bad as you expected it to be! Sorry, this is putting the cart before the horse for me. I am what I feed my soul, and if I feed myself negative, then that is what I will get in return. No Thanks! That isn't recovery to me, that is living and acting out old behaviors and patterns.


I wrote 16 years ago and that was 5 years ago, so I wrote it when I was 2 years sober.

Monday night about 10 my phone and internet disappeared.
This morning the technician at Time Warner checked (after I had talked to three people)
and said my modem had died and they would replace it.
Because this is the second time this happened in two weeks, they were going to try to do it on Tuesday.
Like, immediately! Wow!
Nope. Didn’t happen.
My son came over this evening and did something that resuscitated it and said make sure it gets replaced. I’m on the schedule for Wednesday morning.

Maybe I shouldn’t wait another hour+ to send these….
But, it lasted two weeks the last time it was resuscitated….
