August 1 Meditation

As you take a very deep breath, visualize yourself breathing in the color green. As you exhale completely, see yourself breathing out the color yellow. Next, breathe in the color blue as deeply as you can, and breathe out the color orange. Then, draw in the color purple with your breath, seeing the purple entering all of your cells and your bloodstream. Finally, breathe out the color red completely. Repeat this entire process three times.

It’s easy to become entangled in problems and difficulties. You probably feel stuck at times, as if you just can’t move forward in your life. But the solution may be as simple as setting aside just 20 minutes a day, every day, to meditate. Start by sitting comfortably (or lying down if you prefer), closing your eyes, and just relaxing. Loosen your muscles and start to pay attention to your breathing, noticing areas of tension. Send your body a message: Everything is fine, everything is at peace. Relax, take it easy. Ask each muscle to let go of tension and tightness. Let scattered thoughts float gently out of your mind, and ask your mind to block out the clamoring voices that usually bombard you—one by one if necessary. Take one thing at a time, one problem at a time. Live this moment intensely—this precious, unique moment of grace, light, and elevation—by letting go and surrendering.

Meditation strengthens our steadfastness with ourselves. Whatever arises—pain, boredom, sleepiness, wild thoughts or emotions—we learn to stay with it. We come to see that meditation isn’t about attaining some ideal state. It’s about being able to stay with ourselves, no matter what. Even longtime practitioners sometimes find themselves trying to use meditation as a way of escaping difficult emotions. But transformation comes only when we remember to move toward rather than away from our emotional distress. In meditation we learn to stay with the nonconceptual energy of the emotion, experience it fully, then leave it as it is, without adding fuel to the fire.

Love this quote, it has been so, so true in my life. Seems like either I am trying to see how far I can go or the addict is pushing my buttons to see what he can get away with.

By the time I realized that there is a problem, or should I say, by the time I am willing to acknowledge that there is a problem, it is generally gone, way too far, and takes a lot of back peddling or an about face and I have to go back to the beginning.

It generally means new boundaries, reinforce some old ones, detach in love, and PRAY, asking for help, for yourself and the addict in your life.

As the old saying goes, "Give an inch, they will take a mile." It isn't always the addict, it is me that is giving the inch, if I start it, why wouldn't I expect the addict to walk through the space I provide. In other words, do what I tell others to do, stop enabling.

If something doesn't work, doesn't mean it was wrong, it just didn't work or wasn't right for this situation. I just need to try something else, or give it up, and don't even go there, back off and let go. I can change my mind, but unless I follow it through with action, it isn't going to happen.

Meditation isn’t merely a means to attain enlightenment, it’s also an extremely worthwhile process in and of itself, for it helps us get in touch with our true selves. Getting to know ourselves is the best way to learn, for this is how we can ultimately transform our fears and limitations into power and joy. The main lesson to be learned in life is to love other people—and ourselves—unconditionally. This is the knowledge that makes us divine, and it’s the essence of meditation. Every step move you take is sacred; every breath you breathe is holy: If you understand and practice these lessons, you’ll be mindful, and your consciousness will shift from the everyday to the “other” perspective. You’ll become observant, detached, and free from judgment.

Here is an active approach to cultivating mindfulness that many people can use as a change of pace from sitting meditation. It consists of walking while concentrating totally on every step you take. You need to walk slowly enough to be able to be mindful of your least movement, but not so slowly that you lose your balance. With each step, be mindful of your balance, of how you touch your heel to the ground and then progressively bring your whole foot down, and of how the other foot leaves the ground and comes down again farther on. Keep your gaze directed downward a few steps in front of you, maintaining the walking itself as your main object of concentration. If you don’t have a big space, then walk back and forth, pausing for a second or two each time you turn around and remaining mindful of this interruption of your movement.

Relaxation, visualization, meditation, and regression can be used in order to eliminate stress, tension, fears, and phobias in a holistic way. I teach my patients meditation techniques that they can immediately incorporate into their daily routines, as well as use for the rest of their lives. These techniques can reduce insomnia, for instance, as well as help with weight control, smoking cessation, stress reduction, strengthening the immune system, fighting infections and chronic illness, and lowering blood pressure. The health ramifications seem endless. I’m quite convinced that regular meditation is a priceless tool for the recovery and maintenance of health, for the chemistry and the physics of the body are indeed influenced by mental and spiritual energies.

It is essential to maintain the continuity of meditation day after day, because in this way your practice gradually gains substance and stability. It is like the way a small trickle of water little by little turns into a stream and then a river. The traditional texts state that it is better to meditate regularly and repeatedly for short periods of time than to do long sessions every now and then. For example, you could devote 20 minutes a day to meditating formally and also take advantage of short breaks in your daily activities to recall the experience you had during your formal sessions, even if only for a few moments.

If you could understand the power of your words, you would be careful about what you say. You would constantly use positive affirmations. The Universe always says yes to whatever you say, no matter what you choose to believe. The practice of meditation can, and should, be focused on the present. On the one hand, we silence the disturbing voices that bind us to the past. On the other, we must block the often frightening pictures that we ourselves create to represent our concerns about the future. Since our own fears create these pictures, they’re neither comforting nor pleasant—and since there are countless possible futures that we have available to us, these “pictures” may not necessarily manifest as the actual future. Many of our personal conflicts and tensions can be resolved when meditation allows us to concentrate fully on the present. This is how we develop the ability to focus on what’s important, minimizing extraneous thoughts. The practice of meditation needs persistence and tenacity, as negative thoughts may return repeatedly, often through mere force of habit. The past is finished. Learn from it and let it go. As for the future, it isn’t even here yet—of course you should plan for it, but don’t waste your time worrying about it. Worrying is worthless. When you stop focusing on what has already happened and what may never happen, then you’ll be in the present moment. Then you’ll begin to experience joy in life.

When my blood pressure was high today, I did a prayer and meditation and used the pressure points that Bill from the Holistic Center showed me. I also prayed for the healing and what I needed in the moment. My blood pressure dropped 14 points and my head ache has gone away.

When we begin to work on ourselves, sometimes things get worse before they get better. It’s okay if that happens. It’s the beginning of the process. It’s untangling old threads. We need to just flow with it. It takes time and effort to learn what we need to learn. We might not see changes instantly. Impatience is only resistance to learning. It means we want the goal without going through the process. We need to let ourselves learn, step by step. It will get easier as we go along.

Praise yourself and tell yourself how absolutely wonderful you are. Don’t make yourself wrong. When you do something new, don’t beat yourself up because you’re not a pro at it the first time. Practice. Learn what does work and what doesn’t work. Next time you do something new or different, something you are just learning, be there for yourself. Don’t tell yourself what was wrong; tell yourself what was right with it. Praise yourself. Build yourself up, so that the next time you do it, you really feel good about it. Each time you will be better and better and better. Soon you will have a new skill of some sort.

Close your eyes and slowly go through each part of your body, starting with your feet. Give each part of yourself a personality, and imagine speaking to that part to see if there is anything that it wants you to know. Complete the meditation by telling each part how much you love and appreciate it.

Metta, or lovingkindness, is one of the most important Buddhist practices. Simply stated, metta is the heartfelt wish for the well-being of oneself and others. When describing metta, the Buddha used the analogy of the care a mother gives her only child. Lovingkindness is also understood as the innate friendliness of an open heart. To practice lovingkindness meditation, sit in a comfortable and relaxed manner. Take two or three deep breaths with slow, long, and complete exhalations. Let go of any concerns or preoccupations. For a few minutes, feel or imagine the breath moving through the center of your chest in the area of your heart. Metta is first practiced toward oneself, since we often have difficulty loving others without first loving ourselves. Sitting quietly, mentally repeat, slowly and steadily, the following or similar phrases: May I be happy. May I be well. May I be safe. May I be peaceful and at ease. After a period of directing lovingkindness toward yourself, bring to mind a friend or someone in your life who has deeply cared for you. Then slowly repeat phrases of lovingkindness toward him or her: May you be happy. May you be well. May you be safe. May you be peaceful and at ease.

Rejoice from the bottom of your heart in the accomplishments of these people. Wish for their good qualities not to wane, but on the contrary to continue and flourish. The ability to feel joy in the most positive qualities of others is the best antidote there is to discouragement and to a dim and desperate view of the world and of human beings. It is also the remedy for envy and jealousy, which are reflections of the inability to rejoice in the happiness of others.
