Sorry I missed posting yesterday, some thoughts to think of and remember it is all about today and what we do with it. Maybe I should forget more often. :)

1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

What do I consider most important in my life?

What situation in my life do I feel the most joy or the most sadness about?

When do I feel the most calm and serene?

How do I use the Serenity Prayer in my daily life?

What about myself am I embarrassed or ashamed to tell another person or even my Higher Power?

Most important for me is to be healthy and to walk my talk.

The Third and Fifth Traditions give me a reason for living in today and I believe I need to give back what was given to me.

Family and friends are important, but if I don't take care of myself and fill me up, I have nothing to give to others that has real substance and value.

One of the joys in today for me is a new connection with a long-time friend who I went through treatment with fourteen years ago.

What makes me sad is that the first fellow I had coffee with who was also in a near by treatment center is still out there using.

In my own life, I have a lot to be grateful. I don't have a lot of 'stuff' but I have been truly blessed by this program.

Normally I can find that space on a regular basis but due to the chaos in my life and my living conditions, it is not as serene as I would like it.

Music, candles, friends and fellowship with the God of my understanding helps me to be balanced and centered and at peace with myself and others.

It was good to know that you can't wear this prayer out when I was in early recovery. I still say it many times a day, and for me in the moment, it is learning to have the wisdom to know the difference.

As they say, in all times of emotional stress say:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

My biggest shame is not giving and being enough.

The thing I like about the Serenity Prayer is that it works and you can't wear it out, no matter how many times you say it. What I did find was that I was saying it over and over, and forgetting to leave the prayer in my God's Hands, which shows a lack of faith and trust that He will answer.

It says pray without ceasing, but not sure it means saying the same prayer, over and over again, especially if it is for the same thing. Yet having said that, there have been times, when it was the only thing that grounded and centered me to get through what I needed to do, to get through the moment, the hour, the day.

It helps me to just be.

Accept yourself for who you are because who you are has a purpose and an important reason for being. Lord, Your love for me makes me special and lovable.

Today I know my journey to peace and serenity begins with me. Today I have the faith and trust to seek my answers from within.

Life will be so much easier if you can accept that things don't always go as planned and see that these are often magnificent opportunities. Lord, help me learn from the occurrences of today that seem to go awry and show me how to make the situation better through my own flexibility and creativity.

Allow your mind to become quiet and less judgmental and you will feel improvements in all areas of your life. Lord, help my mind avoid twisting the words I hear and misjudging the intentions of others in order to justify my own righteousness. Help me to spread Your peace.

No matter what is going on in my life today, I can always find something for which to be grateful. When I stop and think about this and make a gratitude list, there is no room for depression or self pity. There is so much to be grateful for today.

That probably got your attention! :P but there is no spirtual part of the AA program it is all spiritual! Working the steps of AA has lead me in to a spiritual existence that I did not believe possible. I thought that I had no principles, no morals, that I wasn't much use and was always going to fail. Working the steps of alcoholics anonymous has given me principles, morals and a belief in my self and if that isn't spirituality I dont know what is.

Lace x

Love it! I was raise in religion and it didn`t stop me from becoming an alcoholic or addict. It wasn`t until I found AA that I found true spirituality. I was able to stop and stay stopped. My religious beliefs enhance my spiritual beliefs, and my spiritual beliefs enrich my religious beliefs.

There would be no accumulation of strength inside if the choices that you make did not require discipline and intention.

- Gary Zukav

Burdens Give Us Wings

An old legend relates that long ago God had a great many burdens which He wished to have carried from one place to another on earth, so He asked the animals to lend a hand. But all of them began to make excuses for not helping: the elephant was too dignified; the lion, too
proud; and so on.

Finally the birds came to God and said, "If you will tie the burdens into small bundles, we'll be glad to carry them for You. We are small but we would like to help."

So God fastened upon the back of each one a small bundle, and they all set out walking across the plain to their destination. They sang as they went, and did not seem to feel the weight of their burdens at all.

Every day the burdens seemed lighter and lighter, until the loads seem to be lifting the birds, instead of the birds carrying the burdens.

When they arrived at their destination, they discovered that when they removed their loads, there were wings in their place, wings which enabled them to fly to the sky and the tree tops.

They had learned how to carry their burdens, and their loads had become wings to carry them nearer to God.

Burdens we carry for others may become wings of the spirit, to lift us into happiness such as we have never known.

"It takes time to grow into freedom. We have time yet.

- Anne Wilson Schaef

This covers a lot of ground. My freedom as a woman, who no longer lives her life through other people, who is not afraid to be her 'own' person is the biggest freedom I have gained in recovery.

I hear freedom from active addiction, and for the most part that is true, but that is the reason for the second statement. I may be free from my drug of choice, but I am always vulnerable about other substance coming into my life and want to take over." So I have to work on my freedom daily, to allow myself freedom from the bondage of self and the nature of my disease.

I never had a concept of "just one" in my life! I had no understanding of "one day at a time", which frees me from the mistakes and cares of yesterday, release of me from the self-imposed obligation of looking at tomorrow (because I have have is the past to base my projections on), which allows me to live in today free to enjoy life in the moment, in God's care with love and faith, instead of my manipulations, guilt, and fear.

There is no price high enough to give up my freedom of today.

Not sure what I was thinking when I wrote this in 2004, unless it was there was no way I would be willing to give up the freedom of recovery and go back into the bondage of self and active addiction again.

Realized early that I had already paid for the price of freedom. Freedom is a gift of recovery, not something I have to pay for. Having said that, the gift is priceless.

TRY SMILING

http://www.angelwinks.net/images/smilecards/smilecards13.gif

When the weather suits you not,
Try smiling.
When your coffee isn’t hot,
Try smiling.
When your neighbors don’t do right,
Or your relatives all fight,
Sure ‘tis hard, but then you might
Try smiling.
Doesn’t change the things ,of course–
Just smiling.
But it can not make them worse—
Just smiling.
And it seems to help your case,
Brightens up a gloomy place,
Then, it sort o’ rests your face—
Just smiling,

The Rules For Being Human

Cherie Carter-Scott

1)You will receive a body.

You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours for the entire period of time around.

2)You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time school called Life.
Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant or stupid.

3)There are no mistakes, only lessons.

Growth is a process of trial and error: Experimentation.

The "failed" experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately "works."

4)A lesson is repeated until learned.

A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it, you can them go on to the next lesson.

5)Learning lessons does not end.

There is no part of life that does not contain it's lessons.

If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.

6)"There" is no better than "here".

When you are "there" has become a "here", you will simply obtain another "there" that will again look better than "here".

7)Others are merely mirrors of you.

You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects something you love or hate about yourself.

8)What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.

9)Your answers lie inside you. The answers to Life's questions lie inside you. All you need to do is look, listen, and trust.

10)YOU WILL FORGET ALL THIS.
How true! This was something I didn't want to allow myself. People repeatedly seemed to be saying, "Well you are only human you know!" That wasn't acceptable to me. I could not always be perfect and right but I felt that it was my job in recovery to be the best me I could be each day. I didn't always live up to my expectations and I learned not to beat myself up for falling short of who and what I wanted to be, and yet I felt better within me for having tried.

Before recovery, I didn't try. I had given up on life and I got to the stage where I was sick and tired of being tired and sick. I have been back there a few times since then and it is not a good place to be. Thank God for this program.

Posted on another site in 2013, probably a duplicate. :(

When I came through the doors of recovery, I wasn't too sure I was glad to be alive. For several long weeks it had been stop the world, I want to get off.

It talks about being human, and I didn't feel very human or humane. When you live in a room in the YWCA there are not too many places around that look much better than here, when all the places are the same, except maybe neater or with more stuff. Which is what life is all about, we look a the surface and look at what we don't have rather than what we do have.

Welcome to the journey of recovery.

Learn to recognize when something isn't working or isn't flowing. Step back and wait for clear guidance.

Today, I will not make myself crazy by repeatedly trying solutions that have proven themselves unsuccessful. If something isn't working, I will step back and wait for guidance.

Language of Letting Go for June 28, posted in 2011

Today, I will not make myself crazy by repeatedly trying solutions that have proven themselves unsuccessful. If something isn't working, I will step back and wait for guidance.

Melody Beattie

I think everyone can identify with this statement. I tried and tried my way for years. My best thinking got me to the doors of recovery. Why should I continue to do the same thing over and over again, and expect different results.

Today, I try to listen for that guidance. Little things along the way on each day's journey, affirms my God is with me. Like getting my two special note pads on sale for $1. in a store I seldom go by and never go in. Today finding pineapple, peeled and cored in a store that is more economically friendly than where I normally get it.

Having thoughts of my friend and having her call me. Having thoughts of my other friend and me calling her. I saw a Hello Kitty Doll today and asked the price and was told it was $8.99. I thought not worth it. Found out it was $2. cheaper, but didn't buy it although I was tempted. I kept thinking of the new microwave I am trying to save up for.

Across the top of my monitor is a bear, a frog, a pink pig, and a reindeer. I didn't have room for her anyway and she was white, and I envisioned her to be a good dust magnet. I thought, in the past, it would have been thought, react. It would have been bought, because I wanted it and to heck with anything else.

I have had to change the thinking, I had to still my mind, and in that stillness, say the Serenity Prayer, ask for the guidance and in the quiet, listen for the answer. The guidance is there. Sometimes it is subtle, other times it feels like a cast iron frying pan. Today I wanted to buy flowers. It was only $3.99 for a bouquet. I was wanting to ignore the fact that they were fresh flower and if I had brought them home, I would have ended up with a sinus headache, be all stuffed up and would have to use my inhaler, and my eyes would water and I wouldn't be able to read. Acceptance is the key. I can look but can't touch. I need to play the tape to the end.

Came to a new awareness, that voice inside isn't always my Higher Power, quite often it can be my disease that is talking.

When I see what people do, act, don't do, or say, and my mind still says or thinks, "Your a$$ is sucking air." I know that I am still in my disease. I know that it is anger, resentment, or a lack of me working part of my program. There are a few choice words in my mind lately, and I came to realize it was my resentment and anger, along with some suppressed feelings and not vocalizing what I really wanted to say. They use to be a lot worse, but that doesn't make them right. It isn't who I want to be in today.

My God wants me to be loving, caring and forgiving, so one day at a time, I will listen to His Guidance and ask for the healing of my own thoughts.

http://www.animated-gifs.eu/flora/0031.gif

Our disease show up in different forms and often comes out in disguise. Thankfully it doesn`t take so long to recognize it, unless I am in total denial. i.e. My eating half a pan of brownies. Did I ever tell you that I like Garfield. He is the perfect example of a food addict.

The Meaning of Peace
=================

There was once a king who offered a prize to the artist who could paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures, but there were only two that he really liked, and he had to choose between them.

One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for the peaceful towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The second picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell, and in which lightening played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.

But when the king looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest....a perfect picture of peace.

Which of the pictures won the prize?

The king chose the second picture.

Do you know why?

"Because," explained the king, "Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work.

Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace."

That is the REAL meaning of peace.

SUIT UP AND SHOW UP
In A.A. we aim not only for sobriety — we try again to become citizens of the world that we rejected, and of the world that once rejected us. This is the ultimate demonstration toward which Twelfth Step work is the first but not the final step.
— AS BILL SEES IT, p. 21

The old line says, "Suit up and show up," That action is so important that I like to think of it as my motto. I can choose each day to suit up and show up, or not. Showing up at meetings starts me toward feeling a part of that meeting, for then I can do what I say I'll do at meetings. I can talk with newcomers, and I can share my experience; that's what credibility, honesty, and courtesy really are. Suiting up and showing up are the concrete actions I take in my ongoing return to normal living.

My sponsor use to say, "Suit up and show up for the day and the rest will follow. You may be the only Big Book someone sees. Do people look at you and see recovery?

These are a few simple suggestions for people who are willing to make an experiment. You can discover for yourself the most important and practical thing any human being can ever learn – how to be in touch with God.

All that is needed is the willingness to try it honestly. Every person who has done this consistently and sincerely has found that it really works.

Before you begin, look over these fundamental points. They are true and are based on the experience of thousands of people.

1. God is alive. He always has been and He always will be.
2. God knows everything.
3. God can do anything.
4. God can be everywhere – all at the same time. (These are the
important differences between God and us human beings).
5. God is invisible – we can't see Him or touch Him – but, God is here.
He is with you now. He is beside you. He surrounds you. He fills the room or the whole place where you are right now. He is in you now. He is in your heart.
6. God cares very much for you. He is interested in you. He has a plan for your life. He has an answer for every need and problem you face.
7. God will tell you all that you need to know. He will not always tell you all that you want to know.
8. God will help you do anything that He asks you to do.
9. Anyone can be in touch with God, anywhere and at any time, if the conditions are obeyed.

These are the conditions:

- To be quiet and still
- To listen
- To be honest about every thought that comes
- To test the thoughts to be sure that they come from God
- To obey

So, with these basic elements as a background, here are specific suggestions on How to Listen to God:

1. Take Time
Find some place and time where you can be alone quiet and undisturbed. Most people have found that the early morning is the best time. Have with you some paper and pen or pencil.
2. Relax
Sit in a comfortable position. Consciously relax all your muscles. Be loose. There is no hurry. There needs to be no strain during these minutes. God cannot get through to us if we are tense and anxious about later responsibilities.
3. Tune In
Open your heart to God. Either silently or aloud, just say to God in a natural way that you would like to find His plan for your life – you want His answer to the problem or situation that you are facing just now.
Be definite and specific in your request.
4. Listen
Just be still, quiet, relaxed and open. Let your mind go "loose." Let God do the talking. Thoughts, ideas, and impressions will begin to come into your mind and heart. Be alert and aware and open to every one.
5. Write!
Here is the important key to the whole process. Write down everything that comes into your mind.
Everything. Writing is simply a means of recording so that you can remember later. Don’t sort out or edit your thoughts at this point.
Don't say to yourself:
This thought isn't important; This is just an ordinary thought; This can't be guidance; This isn't nice; This can't be from God; This is just me thinking..., etc.

Write down everything that passes through your mind:
Names of people;
Things to do;
Things to say;
Things that are wrong and need to be made right.
Write down everything:
Good thoughts - bad thoughts;
Comfortable thoughts - uncomfortable thoughts;
"Holy" thoughts - "unholy" thoughts;
Sensible thoughts - "crazy" thoughts.
Be honest! Write down everything! A thought comes quickly, and it escapes even more quickly unless it is captured and put down.
6. Test
When the flow of thoughts slows down, stop. Take a good look at what you have written. Not every thought we have comes from God. So we need to test our thoughts.

Here is where the written record helps us to be able to look at them.

a. Are these thoughts completely honest, pure, unselfish and loving?
b. Are these thoughts in line with our duties to our family – to our community?
c. Are these thoughts in line with our understanding of the teachings found in our spiritual literature?

7 Check
When in doubt and when it is important, what does another person who is living two-way prayer think about this thought or action? More light comes in through two windows than one. Someone else who also wants God's plan for our lives may help us to see more clearly.
Talk over together what you have written. Many people do this. They tell each other what guidance has come.
This is the secret of unity. There are always three sides to every question – your side, my side, and the right side. Guidance shows us which is the right side – not who is right, but what is right.
8. Obey
Carry out the thoughts that have come. You will only be sure of guidance as you go through with it.
A rudder will not guide a boat until the boat is moving. As you obey, very often the results will convince you that you are on the right track.
9. Blocks
What if I don't seem to get any definite thoughts? God's guidance is as freely available as the air we breathe. If I am not receiving thoughts when I listen, the fault is not God's.

Usually it is because there is something I will not do:
- something wrong in my life that I will not face and make right;
- a habit or indulgence I will not give up;
- a person I will not forgive;
- a wrong relationship in my life I will not give up;
- a restitution I will not make;
- something God has already told me to do that I will not obey.

Check these points and be honest. Then try listening again.

10. Mistakes
Suppose I make a mistake and do something in the name of God that isn't right? Of course we make mistakes. We are humans with many faults. However, God will always honor our sincerity.
He will work around and through every honest mistake we make. He will help us make it right. But remember this! Sometimes when we do obey God, someone else may not like it or agree with it.
So when there is opposition, it doesn't always mean you have made a mistake. It can mean that the other person doesn't want to know or to do what is right.
Suppose I fail to do something that I have been told and the opportunity to do it passes?
There is only one thing to do. Put it right with God. Tell Him you're sorry. Ask Him to forgive you, then accept His forgiveness and begin again. God is our Father – He is not an impersonal calculator. He understands
us far better than we do.

11. Results
We never know what swimming is like until we get down into the water and try. We will never know what this is like until we sincerely try it.
Every person who has tried this honestly finds that a wisdom, not their own, comes into their minds and that a Power greater than human power begins to operate in their lives. It is an endless adventure.
There is a way of life, for everyone, everywhere.

Anyone can be in touch with the living God, anywhere, anytime, if we fulfill His conditions:
When man listens, God speaks.
When man obeys, God acts.
This is the law of prayer.
God's plan for this world goes forward through the lives of ordinary people who are willing to be governed by Him.

God Found Me

I believe that God found me, more than I found Him. It was similar to

watching a child walk; he falls down again and again, but it is better not

to try to help him until he comes to realize that he cannot do it alone---

and extends his hand. I had gotten myself into a position where I had

no other place to turn; I was at a point of almost complete despair. Then,

and only then, did I honestly and simply ask God to help me. He came to

me instantly, and I could feel his presence, even as I do this moment.

What Kind Of God?
I have to believe that there's a purpose for everything," my student said, as much to herself, I suspected, as to her classmates. Her position made perfect sense.

If she didn't believe that bad things happen for a reason, how would she be able to deal with the head injury her father had suffered several years ago, or for that matter, with her birth mother's decision to give her up for adoption?

Heads nodded in agreement all around the room.

Sensing that others might not share her certitude, I asked,
"Does anyone have a different point of view?"

Cautiously, a trio of students raised their hands.
I lifted mine as well.
What had taken us down this path was our discussion of Terry Tempest Williams's book 'Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place.' An account of Williams's mother's death from cancer, interwoven with a lament for Utah's flooded Bear River Migratory Bird Sanctuary,

Refuge raises myriad questions about loss, change, faith, and the heart-rending experience of watching a loved one die.

Does God will such things to take place?

I could tell that my students were thinking.

Predominantly college freshmen, these 18- and 19-year-olds have
nonetheless felt the impact of pain in their lives; they have seen parents split up, brothers sent to prison, friends die violently and far too soon behind the wheel of their very first car.

To imagine that these events would have no larger purpose is anathema to them.
Can good come out of suffering?
Of course, I assured them.
To believe this, however, is not the same as believing that God desires our pain.

"What kind of God would this be?"

I asked, not really expecting an answer.
Looking into the middle distance, a few of them pursed their lips and nodded.

They were thinking, I realized; finding the answer, I knew, would take them the rest of their lives.

I don't believe God tests us but I do believe we are taught lessons. So often I have tested God. Okay Big Guy, let's see if you are up to this!

He is a loving God, but for me, more importantly, He is a forgiving one. Most times I cause my own pain and it is a result of choices I have made in the past be it even two days ago. In today I try to make healthy choices. What goes around comes around!

My brother was killed when he was two and I was three. My mother told me that I would go up to my uncle who was driving the truck that ran over him and ask, "Why did you kill my Dougie?" I heard her tell the story many times and it reinforced that I was a bad girl and that I should say those things. I had trouble for years communicating with that uncle because of it. I felt shame and guilt. It wasn't until I was in recovery that I learned that I was a little girl in pain and didn't know how to deal with her pain. I was there, saw it happen and all I can remember is me "Calling Dougie, come out of the way." I thought it was my fault because he was coming to me when he was run over. I later learned that when he was born, I nominated myself as his caregiver. I felt the guilt because I wasn't able to save him and take care of him. It was heavy burden for a little girl to carry, let alone the woman who didn't deal with the issue unto 50 years later.

Hold on to the truth that all dark nights end with a light illuminating a new path. - Caroline Myss

In times of doubt and difficulty, our attention goes to finding a source of illumination. And if it doesn't seem readily available, we are called upon to do whatever it takes to discover the light within us. Having had to reach deeper within our being to reveal this light, we then expand our capacity to access it.

"I HOLD ON TO THE TRUTH THAT A BRIGHT LIGHT IS RADIATING MY PATH."

"With no inner turmoil can we help others much better?"

Discover The Power Of Loving Yourself

Sometimes it's hard to trust life with all its sudden twist,
turns, and storms. When something unexpected or
painful happens, when we become blocked or
frustrated, when life takes a different course than we
hoped it would, it's easy to stop trusting the flow of our
lives.

It didn't ask for this. It's not fair. I don't want this, we think.
This road isn't leading anywhere, at least no where I
want to go. Often, when we feel life has turned on us,
we respond by turning on ourselves. But turning on
ourselves doesn't help. In fact, it can compound the
situation.

It can prevent us from healing and acting on the very
guidance that will lead us through, get us through,
and take us to the next place. It can prevent us from
hearing our heart.

Keep loving yourself, and taking care of yourself, no
matter what__through the storms, the twist, the turns,
and the blocks.

Take a moment, breathe deep, restore yourself to that
sacred place of self-love and self-responsibility.
Feel all your feelings. Them let them go.

Love yourself until you can hear your heart
and what it tells you to do.

Love yourself until you find the courage to act
on that guidance.

Loving yourself is a powerful tool, a powerful force for change.
It can reconnect you to creativity, to universal love,
to the best possible flow of events within your life.
It can and will reconnect you to life's magic.

There's a trustworthy road through whatever life brings.
Loving yourself will help you find it.

TRIP HOME!

A pastor had been on a long flight between church conferences..

The first warning of the approaching problems came
when the sign on the airplane flashed on:
Fasten Your Seat-Belts.
Then, after a while, a calm voice said,
"We shall not be serving the beverages at this time
as we are expecting a little turbulence.
Please be sure your seat belt is fastened."

As the pastor looked around the aircraft,
it became obvious that many of the passengers
were becoming apprehensive.
Later, the voice on the intercom said,
"We are so sorry that we are unable to serve the meal at this time.
The turbulence is still ahead of us."

And then the storm broke .

The ominous cracks of thunder could be heard even
above the roar of the engines.
Lightning lit up the darkening skies,
and within moments that great plane was like a cork
tossed around on a celestial ocean.
One moment the airplane was lifted on terrific currents of air;
the next, it dropped as if it were about to crash.

The pastor confessed that he shared the discomfort
and fear of those around him.
He said, "As I looked around the plane,
I could see that nearly all the passengers
were upset and alarmed.
Some were praying.
The future seemed ominous and many
were wondering if they would make it through the storm.

"Then, I suddenly saw a little girl.
Apparently the storm meant nothing to her..
She had tucked her feet beneath her as she sat on her seat;
she was reading a book and
everything within her small world was calm and orderly.

"Sometimes she closed her eyes, then she would read again;
then she would straighten her legs,
but worry and fear were not in her world.

When the plane was being buffeted by the terrible storm
when it lurched this way and that,
as it rose and fell with frightening severity,
when all the adults were scared half to death,
that marvellous child was completely composed and unafraid."
The minister could hardly believe his eyes.

It was not surprising therefore, that when the plane finally reached its
destination and all the passengers were hurrying to disembark, our pastor
lingered to speak to the girl whom he had watched for such a long time.

Having commented about the storm and the behavior of the plane,
he asked why she had not been afraid. The child replied,
"Cause my Daddy's the pilot, and he's taking me home."

There are many kinds of storms that buffet us.
Physical, mental, financial, domestic, and
many other storms can easily and quickly
darken our skies and
throw our plane into apparently uncontrollable movement.
We have all known such times,
and let us be honest and confess,
it is much easier to be at rest
when our feet are on the ground
than when we are being tossed about a darkened sky.

Let us remember: Our Father is the Pilot.
He is in control and taking us home.

Don't worry!

They say:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Beauty is only skin deep.

Beauty comes from the inside out.

All my life I thought I was ugly! I could not believe that people thought I was attracted. If someone wanted to be with me they always had alterer motives or it was my personality they were attracted to, which is funny because for most of my heavey using years I was a first class 'itch.

If I adorned myself to reflect my heart, what would I wear - Anne Wilson Schaef

What a statement, makes you kind of think. In the past it would have been dangling earrings for sure, they made me feel light hearted and devil may care.

Make up for sure, and yet today my boyfriend says I don't need it because I have very few wrinkles and my skin is still quite firm. Mind you when I lose some of the fluid and weight I have been carrying, I have to do some toning up exercises. It depends on whether I want to look I am under 55 or over 55 whether I wear makeup, and who I am trying to impress. When I went to court with my sponsee I wore make up. The difference is today I don't have to put it on with a pallet knife.

One of the greatest freedoms in recovery was the day I could stop wearing clothes to hide my figure and could accept it for what is was. The day I tucked my shirt into my jeans was a miracle.

My dress code today is jeans, a turtle neck and a jacket. If you can get me out of that, I will put on a long skirted dress. I love hats. I like plain and simple. My sponsor said if you have recovery show it, so I like to keep it simple. I am not for flowers, lace, buttons and bows, I am denim, jersey, cotton and zippers.

I wear red, black, white, navy, green, gold, and brown, and grays. I am a fire girl who loves colors which connect her to Mother Earth. I do have blue in my wardrobe today, but for years it drained me of all colour and it is only age that allows me to wear it. Some people find it comforting and relaxing and for the most part all it did was remind me of my ex-husband and his family, so being able to wear it today is a big recovery step.

I think true beauty is when you walk into a room and no one notices what you are wearing.

This was posted on another site in 2004. Since then the blonde has gone and I am content to wear my gray. I still don't like the swelling, and I can't eat all the foods I use to eat because of diabetes, but the body is not bad for an old woman. You can't defy gravity forever and the wrinkles started to get a little deeper when I reached 65, although there are not that many all things considered. LOL!

If you want to beat traffic. . .

Pick some fruit!!

https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSGoPFxySy2i50cTxsZ5kzlOThzUl0ja 9YoiVeMdaej0ulzAZhP

Yesterday it took me an hour and fifteen minutes to go 10 miles.

I was frustrated.
I was powerless.
I was exhausted.
I was grateful.
I was victorious.
I was energized.

Heavy traffic volumes are a fact of life in any big city. Many of the local governments fund road improvement programs, only to close lanes as they improve the roads.

Lanes close, traffic increases, people get more frustrated and distracted, they have accidents, they cause more traffic pile-ups.

It's a vicious cycle.

It is often said that a person's first reaction in times of crisis tells a lot about that person. I say that a person's reaction while traveling six inches per minute tells even more about that person.

Sitting in traffic is one of the best times to pick some fruit.

Pick some patience. . .
You'll be able to relax. After all, you'll be sitting there for a while anyway.

Pick some peace. . .
Try something different --- instead of listening to the radio traffic reports about the traffic you're sitting in, turn the radio off. Play a classical CD.
Or better yet, just enjoy the quiet time.

Pick some kindness. . .
Smile at the person in the car next to you. Now that's really different!

Pick some love. . .
Start a conversation with your spouse or child about something you know is bothering them. Time spent driving can be time spent talking and understanding each other.

Pick some joy. . .
Be thankful that you're not the person involved in the calamity that's causing the traffic.

Pick some faith. . .
Take this time to look up at the sky, observe the trees, marvel at the birds. Think about your own life. Then you'll know for sure that there is a God.

Pick some gentleness. . .
I know you have a cell phone, so pick it up and call someone you haven't spoken to in months. You still remember the number.

Pick some goodness. . .
Plan a good deed that you'll do for someone as soon as you get out of the traffic. Maybe there's something you can do immediately to help the person on the side of the road.

Pick some meekness. . .
No matter what kind of car you're riding in, understand that it's not by your own works that you were able to obtain it.

Once you pick your fruit, your frustration, powerlessness, and exhaustion will transform into gratitude, victory and energy.

You'll have a new outlook on life all because you pulled over,
. . . and decided to pick some fruit.

They say, if we do the work, we will see the fruit of our labour. If you don't put something into it, you won't get anything out of it.

I think that is why they say, give it a way in order to keep it. When you do, it comes back to you, not always from the same source, but it will come back.

May you have a fruitful life today.

Love is but the discovery of ourselves in others, and the delight in the recognition. -Alexander Smith

One reason our program has such power to change lives is that it is based on the principle of sharing between people with similar problem and experiences. We are able to help each other when nothing else seems to work because we can identify with one another. We recognize ourselves in each other, making it easier to love one another

God made us all equal. It is hard for us to believe this until we see others who seem so different, but are really just like us. The knowledge that we are essentially alike -that God gave each of us the same feelings, the same inner needs -comforts us and gives us confidence. That's why it's important that we share ourselves by revealing our feelings.

I will share my feelings with others today and delight in the recognition it brings.

In God's Care

PRAYER FOR TODAY: I pray that I may recognize the goodness I see in others. May I acknowledge and affirm the source is reflected from within me.

DAILY OM

Working Through Silence
Noise as a Distraction

Our lives are typically filled with noise. There are the noises from the outside world that we cannot control, and there are the noises we allow into our lives. These noises, from seemingly innocuous sources like the television and radio, can actually help us avoid dealing with uncomfortable thoughts and emotions. However, using noise as a distraction hurts more than it helps because you are numbing yourself to what may be internally bubbling up to the surface for you to look at and heal. Distracting yourself with talk-radio, television, or other background noises can also prevent you from finding closure to issues that haunt you.

Noise as a distraction can affect us in many ways. It can help you stay numb to emotions that you don’t want to feel, allow you to avoid dealing with problems, distract you from having to think, and make it easier for you to forget reality. Drowning out the thoughts and emotions you find uncomfortable or overwhelming can complicate your issues because it allows them to fester. By tuning out noise and relishing silence, you create the space to experience and express what you are hiding. It is only then that self-exploration can begin in earnest and you can stare down frightening issues. In silence, it becomes easier to let your strongest feelings come forth, deal with them, and find new ways of resolving your problems.

When you go within without the veil of noise to shield you from yourself, you’ll be able to figure out what you need to heal. Embracing silence and introspection allows you to work through your thoughts and emotions and transmute them. Free of the need for noise, you can accept your pain, anger, and frustration as they come up and turn them into opportunities to evolve.

What do you think?

I could not be alone with myself and had to have the noise happening around me. Now I can make that inward journey when the noise and chaos is there and find peace and quiet.

How hard is it to be with ourselves? So grateful that my God has given me the gift of being able to sit in the quiet and find the stillness as mentioned in Step Three. I did a major meditation yesterday asking for help. I found myself wanting to move onto other things and had to keep bringing myself back and be still, mind, body, and spirit. Whether your God is a Christian one or something much bigger, I found that I still needed that stillness and quiet to connect to the God of my understanding.

Why Doesn't God Answer?

http://www.webweaver.nu/clipart/img/nature/rabbits/bunny.gif

Not long ago I heard a story about a young man and an old preacher. The young man had lost his job and didn't know which way to turn. So he went to see the old preacher.

Pacing about the preacher's study, the young man ranted about his problem. Finally he clenched his fist and shouted, "I've begged God to say something to help me. Tell me, Preacher, why doesn't God answer?"

The old preacher, who sat across the room, spoke something in reply--something so hushed it was indistinguishable. The young man stepped across the room. "What did you say?" he asked.

The preacher repeated himself, but again in a tone as soft as a whisper. So the young man moved closer until he was leaning
on the preacher's chair. "Sorry," he said. "I still didn't hear you." With their heads bent together, the old preacher spoke once more. "God sometimes whispers," he said, "so we will move closer to hear Him."

This time the young man heard and he understood. We all want God's voice to thunder through the air with the answer to our problem. But God's is the still, small voice. . .the gentle whisper.

Perhaps there's a reason. Nothing draws human focus quite like a whisper. God's whisper means I must stop my ranting and move close to Him, until my head is bent together with His. And then, as I listen, I will find my answer.

Better still, I find myself closer to God.

The Man In The Glass

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.

For it isn't your father or mother or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass.
The fellow whose verdict counts most in you life
Is the one staring back from the glass.

You may be like Jack Horner and chisel a plum
And think you're a wonderful guy.
But the man in the glass says you're only a bum
If you can't look him straight in the eye.

He's the fellow to please-never mind all the rest,
For he's with you clear to the end.
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass.
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you've cheated the man in the glass.

There is so much familiarity to pain that we don't want to let it go. I need to remember that I am not alone, that anything that happens in the future, God is with me, if I choose to take Him along.

When I project into the future all I have is the past to base my decisions on. It can keep me immobized in today, fearful of taking that first step in a new direction.

I can not grow in my recovery, if I stay the same. I have never been satisfied with just being "clean" without the gift of sobriety and the other rewards of being open to receive that the fellowships offer me.

It would be pretty boring if I got up in front of a room and shared the same story, over and over again, with no deviation showing some growth and change in my life. I wouldn't be carry a very good message of recovery if I just stayed the same. I would be acting out my disease without picking up, after all the substance is but a symptom, I am the problem, the program is the solution.

Each day is a new beginning.

A day can start anytime.

A meeting starts when you get there, and ends when you leave.

Yesterday ended last night.

What are you thinking?

"I never know what I think about something until I read what I've written on it."

-- William Faulkner

What have you been thinking lately?

Do you know? We get so accustomed to our thoughts that we lose awareness of them. We don’t see how they are stuck in old habitual patterns, most of which don’t serve us.

Take time to journal so you can capture your thoughts on paper. By doing so, you will begin to take control of your mind and use it to best advantage.

"When you choose to understand [and] exercise control over the functions and attributes of your own mind, you will be empowered to create your own reality, to be completely self-reliant and totally prosperous."

-- The Delfin Knowledge System

This is interesting for me because I tend to get caught up in my own mind and that is why it is good to come here and post, pick up the phone and call my sponsor or a friend, or just do a meditation to quiet my mind and put some order to what is going on. When I hear, speak, or read what I think, it often makes more sense and it can be very enlightening.

I remember calling my sponsor one day and nattering off to her, I paused, and then laughed and said, "Oh, I'm on a pity party aren't I?" Until then I hadn't been aware, but by picking up the phone and talking to her, I could see where I was at, accept it, and then move on and change it.

Something I posted on another site in 2008

Seeing as I have had the thought pity party and pity pot, perhaps I need to address some issues concerning this. I think I am just accepting that I am sitting on the pot, that means I have to take action to change my attitude.

We are all serving a life sentence in the dungeon of self.
-Cyril Connoly

Some say the whole purpose of our sojourn here is to escape from self. It is gloomy and frightening in that private inner dungeon. Many of us have tried to escape, hoping that when we came to our senses we would no longer be a prisoner. Thankfully, our addictions brought us to our knees in defeat -and we had to acknowledge a power greater than ourselves. It was the only way some of us might have ever known God.

Those of us who feel a Guiding Hand in our life know that we escape ourselves by getting involved with others. The bars of self crumble as we become honest and share our fears and weaknesses, hopes and strengths with each other.

Today I will look for opportunities to share my inner self.

If you are planning your own way, trying to make things happen in the strength of your own flesh, then you are frustrated. You probably have said, "No matter what I do, nothing seems to work!"

Relax. Let God be God.

Stop being so hard on yourself.

Change is a process, it comes little by little.

You are on your way, Enjoy the trip!

This is

This is a day that is like no other. This is a moment in which you can make great things happen.

This is a world full of challenge and opportunity. This is a life that's overflowing with possibilities.

This is your chance to make a real, positive difference. This is the time that is yours to fully live.

This is reality, and it is filled with promise. This is when you can begin to make your most treasured dreams real.

This is the place where your choices have brought you. This is your first step toward the best you can imagine.

This moment, this world, this life that you're in can be whatever you decide to make of it. This is your reminder to make it great.

-- Ralph Marston

Thought this was a good reminder at this time of the year. It reminds me that I didn't get to where I am in today on my own and that although I have made some bad choices along the way, I am right where I am suppose to be in this moment; and if I don't like where I am at, I can make another choice.

Each day is a new beginning. I am given freedom of choice.

Each morning when I wake up, I turn my day over to the God of my understanding. My understanding in today is that God is all things. When I try to identify God, I limit Him/Her/It as to how my God can work in my life.

I will be referring to my God as He quite often, only because it is easier to type one word than three. For me, God is three-fold, body, mind and spirit, which makes up me. The Bible says I was made in His image, so He must have a little bit of me in Him. Now that is a scary thought, yet I know he identifies with me, has a sense of humour, is very patient, tolerant, understanding, forgiving, and all those traits which he is try to teach me in today. Whatever the trait, the habit, the ideal, the goal, etc. God and I are working on it just for today.

All I have to deal with is this days thoughts, actions, events, etc. When I stay in today, yesterday has gone, tomorrow hasn't got here yet, and I can live the day to it's fullest.

When I turn each day over to my God, I know things unfold as they should, not as I would always like them. As much as I don't always like it, I am exactly where I am suppose to be.

If I make wrong choices, He brings me back to where I need to be. If I haven't learned a lesson, he keeping putting it in front of me until such a time as I learn what it is I need to know.

I am reminded that it is my knowing for my life, not that of the loved ones in my life.

Something I shared on another site in 2011. It is hard to believe it is 5 years ago.

The last line reminds me of what I use to say to others prior to recovery, "If you are going to pray for me, pray quietly so I can't hear you. The more you say don't, I do!" They say that recovery is a change of attitude sufficient to aid recovery. Mine had to go and I had to go on a spiritual quest to find out who my God was to me.

What is spirituality? What do I need to feed my soul and kindle my spirit?

For me it is about being whole and connected to the God of my understanding. Food for the soul can be anything from a daily reading, to a smile or a kind word from a stranger, a hug, a sunny day such as I am seeing out my window with sailboats gliding over Hamilton Bay (you can't see the polution, all you can see is the pretty picture), word from a friend I haven't heard from in a long time or just a phone call from a loved one. Picking up the phone because someone comes to mind. Giving a smile or a hug to someone who crosses your path. The other morning, while waiting for the bus to go to the meeting, I was sitting on my walker, and a gentleman who I didn't know, walked by me and said hello. Didn't break stride, just kept walking but acknowledged me as a person.

For me it is also getting out my candles and meditating, using my crystals and using them for meditatin and prayer and asking for the healing and comfort I need in the moment. Giving what was so freely given to me back to others. It doesn't always come from the same source, and it doesn't always go back from where it was received. Yet when I acknowledge it, open up to receive it, accept it, gives thanks for it, it is mine to pass on to someone else.

What an empowering thought. My spiritual advisor use to say that anything that came between me and who my God would have me be, becomes the god of my life. I need to stay close to Him and not let the outside things take over my obsessive, compulsive mind.

This is a one day at a time program. It is a program of practice, practicing the spiritual principles of the program. I can't, my God can....

Five Ways You Can Face Obstacles and Turn Them Into Blessings

1) Never dwell on the cause of the obstacle. Rise above it and change the way you respond to it. It only has as much power as you're willing to give it.

2) Check your attitude. Know that you have the ability to control the outcome, and/or to choose the answer that's right for you.

3) Think of an alternative. If one answer doesn't work, or if it doesn't feel right, try another way to get to the best solution.

4) Realize that your view of the obstacle is what may determine how much impact it has on your life.

5) Think about what you were doing just before the obstacle happened. Don't make excuses to yourself. Turn the obstacle into a positive motivator. Then find a way to move toward your goal.

Today's thought is:

Love has a hundred gentle ends.

--Leonora Speyer

Letting go is a process that is seldom easy. For many, its meaning is elusive. How do we "let go"? Letting go means removing our attention from a particular experience or person and putting our focus on the here and now. We hang on to the past, to past hurts, but also to past joys. We have to let the past pass. The struggle to hang on to it, any part of it, clouds the present. You can't see the possibilities today is offering if your mind is still drawn to what was.

Letting go and be a gentle process. Our trust in our higher power and our faith that good will prevail, in spite of appearances, eases the process. And we must let each experience end, as its moment passes, whether it is good or bad, love or sorrow. It helps to remember that all experiences contribute to our growth and wholeness. No experience will be ignored by the inner self who is charting our course. All are parts of the journey. And every moment has a gentle end, but no moment is forgotten.

My journey today is akin to yesterday's journey and tomorrow's too. I will savor each moment and be ready for the next.

Timeless Wisdom by Karen Casey

Always a good lesson. How it works! Living in today. The key word to the slogan "Live and let live," is the first word. Living our own life and letting everything else fall by the way side. Without me, I have nothing. I can't give to others if I don't remember to top myself up. Without you, there is no me. In order to maintain my sobriety, I must share it with others.
Soundness of mind is hard to achieve if we don't learn to let go and let our God direct our path.

God and the Spider

http://bestanimations.com/Animals/Insects/Spiders/animated-spider-gif-25.gif

During World War II,
a US marine was separated from his unit
on a Pacific island.
The fighting had been intense,
and in the smoke and the crossfire
he had lost touch with his comrades.

Alone in the jungle,
he could hear enemy soldiers
coming in his direction.
Scrambling for cover,
he found his way up a high ridge
to several small caves in the rock.
Quickly he crawled inside one of the caves.
Although safe for the moment,
he realized that once the enemy
soldiers looking for him swept up the ridge,
they would quickly search
all the caves and he would be killed.

As he waited, he prayed,
"Lord, if it be your will,
please protect me.
Whatever your will though,
I love you and trust you.
Amen."

After praying,
he lay quietly listening to the enemy
begin to draw close.

He thought,
"Well, I guess the Lord isn't going
to help me out of this one."
Then he saw a spider begin to build a web
over the front of his cave.

As he watched, listening to the enemy
searching for him all the while,
the spider layered strand after strand of web
across the opening of the cave.

"Hah,"
he thought.
"What I need is a brick wall
and what the Lord has sent me is a spider web.
God does have a sense of humor."

As the enemy drew closer he watched
from the darkness of his hideout
and could see them searching
one cave after another.
As they came to his,
he got ready to make his last stand.
To his amazement, however,
after glancing in the direction of his cave,
they moved on.
Suddenly, he realized that
with the spider web over the entrance,
his cave looked as if
no one had entered for quite a while.
"Lord, forgive me,"
prayed the young man.
"I had forgotten that in you a spider's web
is stronger than a brick wall."

We all face times of great trouble.
When we do,
it is so easy to forget
the victories that God
would work in our lives,
sometimes in the most surprising ways.
As the great leader,
Nehemiah,
reminded the people of Israel
when they faced the task of rebuilding Jerusalem,
"In God we will have success!"
[Nehemiah 2:20]

Remember:
Whatever is happening in your life,
with God,
a mere spider's web can become
a brick wall of protection.
Believe He is with you always.
Just speak His name through Jesus His son,
and you will see
His great power and love for you.

Thought for the Day

Sunday
, AUGUST 12

From the book: Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Thought for the Day

"There was nothing left for us but to pick up the simple kit of spiritual tools laid at our feet by Alcoholics Anonymous. By doing so, we have a spiritual experience which revolutionizes our whole attitude toward life, toward others, and toward God's universe. The central fact of our lives today is the absolute certainty that our Creator has entered into our hearts and lives there in a way, which is indeed miraculous. He has commenced to accomplish those things for us which we could never do for ourselves." Have I let God come into my life?

Meditation for the Day

The moment a thing seems wrong to you or a person's actions to be not what you think they should be, at that moment begins your obligation and responsibility to pray for those wrongs to be righted or that person to be changed. What is wrong in your surroundings or in the people you know? Think about these things and make these matters your responsibility. Not to interfere or be a busybody, but to pray that a change may come through your influence. You may see lives altered and evils banished in time. You can become a force for good wherever you are.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may be a co-worker with God. I pray that I may help people by my example.

From "Meditations for Women Who Do Too Much" by Anne Wilson Schaef

If God is a fly on the wall, Nanny, hand me a fly swatter.

- Gaby Brimmer

Even Jesus felt forsaken by God. We can identify with him. We have been angry with God, and we have abandoned our Higher Power because we felt abandoned. This God on whom we want to depend simply refuses to live our lives for us. We want to turn it all over to our Higher Power and lie back and relax, and old H.P. is not cooperating.

Where's the fly swatter? If my Higher Power won't do it my way, to hell with it.

Right! Enjoying ourselves, are we? Isn't this fun? A fight with God - that should keep us occupied for quite some time.

When I feel abandoned by my Higher Power, I am the one who has gone away.
