R is for Recovery. We do recover from that hopeless state of mind and body. We don't recover from being an alcoholic or an addict, we just have daily maintenance and reprieve from active addiction. Recovery is so much more than putting a plug in the jug or putting down the drugs.

R is for Replace

Replace old drinking buddies with new AA buddies.

Replace your negative attitude with a new positive attitude.

Replace your garbage with a balance of spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental stability.

R is for R & R! I need to find time for rest and relaxation, to fill myself up, so I have the energy to do and give. I don't have very much to give if I am operating on fumes, and an empty soul is not very giving or forgiving.

R is for Relapse. Relapse was not an option for me. For me to use is to die. I would die much faster in today if I picked up a cigarette, than if I picked up a drink or a pill.

We can relapse mentally, emotionally, and spiritually before we physically pick up. I know that when I went to meetings, and then as my health issues came to light, I had to keep coming to the site to share with others, I was able to build the defense against that first one. As they say, "It is the engine that kills you, not the caboose."

R is for Realize

We Realized (admitted) that we were powerless over our addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable. That is the first step of recovery!

R is for Respond

We can respond in a loving and caring way. What change we can make in recovery.

R is for Reply. God does always answer prayer, it is up to me to listen for the answers. I was told that He/She says, "Yes! No! You got to be kidding!" Some times the answer is "Not right now!" and I have to remember it is His time, not mine.
