F is for Find

Find Serenity:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace; taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will; so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen - Reinhold Niebuhr

F is for First. First things first is my sobriety. Without it, I have nothing. My first priority is living in the moment, letting go of my past, not projecting into the future, but getting the fullest of each experience in today.

F is for First Step:

We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable.

At what time did you perceive that your disease had control??

Smiling, I thought I was in control. It was a shock to learn that "If you have to control it, it is already out of control." I was in my denial about my alcoholism, even after being in the program. I knew I was an addict, no problem with that. My drug of choice was more, so at first, I just included alcohol with all my other obsessions. I had to get honest and address my alcoholism. I learned that my dad and my ex-husband were drunks, I was the alcoholic. I had the thinking to go with the drinking. It was about 2 years sober, when I had a dream and saw myself as others saw me when I was drinking. Not a very nice picture and someone who qualified to walk through the doors of AA.

F is for Frog. F.R.O.G means fully reliant on God. Frog means cleanse your body, mind and spirit so you can be complete and whole.

F is for Fun

Don't take yourself so seriously. Be kind to yourself. Let the kid in you out and learn to laugh from the gut.

F is for Fellowship. The people in the program loved me back to good health. This is a 'we' program and I need the fellowship of others in order to recovery. I found myself reflected in the faces and the stories of the people in the rooms.

F is for Freedom. Freedom from the disease of addiction and alcoholism, one day at a time. I needed a spiritual defense against that first drug, what ever form it took. Alcohol is a drug. Food is a drug. Work can be a drug too.

Due to my disease, I lost myself. I was very fragmented when I came into recovery. Through working the Steps, I became whole and I was able to obtain the freedom to be myself.

F is for Forget. The Promises say, "We will not regret the past for wish to shut the door on it." That doesn't mean we forget, it just means we let it go and don't let it rule our today. We can go back and look at our past and learn from it, so we don't make the same mistakes in today. We can't forget where we came from. I know I don't want to go back there, but there are times I have to go back if it makes itself known in today. So many things in today are rooted in my past and I have to allow myself to heal and while it is good to detach, sometimes we have to look at all that is associated with the pain. Anger and fear are big ones.

F is for Find

Find the serenity to accept others.

Find the courage to change the things you can.

F is for First Things First. First I must remember that my sobriety is a priority. A slip means Sobriety Loses It's Priority. If I forget that, then I am setting myself up for relapse. I don't have the other things in my life, if I don't have my sobriety. I need to put my sobriety before my friends and family, before fun and frolic, if it jeopardizes my recovery.

F is for Fling. Fling out all that belongs to the past an no longer serves you in today. It isn't just letting go of the people you used with, but the things in your home that associate with your drinking days, like those cocktail glasses and beer shirts. Fling out anything tat may trigger you to pick up that next drink or drug.

F is for FROG

Fully Rely On God

When you are in a bad situation, it might help you is to visualize that shield being a mirror around you reflecting out...then whatever he/she says is being deflected back towards him/her...and you are protected because it is a "God shield" and you are grounded in His love.

F is for freedom

In The Promises on pages 83-84 in the Big Book, it says,"If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are halfway through. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness..."

F is for Fruit. The fruit of our labor is sobriety. There is a difference between being sober and having sobriety. We need to apply the program to all areas of our life, get out of self and help others, and build a relationship with the God of our understanding.

F is for Find

Find a hobby. Something that you like to do. Draw, Paint, Coin Collecting, Reading, Walking, Bike Riding, Woodworking, and Gardening are a few examples. Being idle can be destructive. It is important to keep yourself busy doing things that you like to do. It will help you stay sober.

F is for Flow. I am a go with the flow kind of person. I always try to start my day with the 1, 2, 3 Waltz, asking my God for the Good Orderly Direction that I need each day. When I do that, I know that the day will unfold the way it is suppose to, and it doesn't flow where I am not suppose to be. So grateful for freedom of choice.

F is for Fuel. We need to top up our bodies and only give away the overflow. We don't do ourselves as well as others when our gas tank is empty and we are operating on fumes and we don't have a full tank to do what we need to do properly.

We need fuel for our body, mind, and spirit.

F is for Freedom. Freedom from our drug of choice. Free from the Bondage of Self. Free to be ourselves. Free to choose the God of our understanding.

F is Forget. I will not regret the past or wish to shut the door on it. That is one of the 12 Promises of AA. I can't forget my past, I can learn from it. I just don't have to live in the past or bring it along in today. I can't base my decisions in today on my past, because things need to change.

F is for Fun. We need to take some time out for some fun moments. If we are not enjoying recovery, what are we doing wrong? Recovery is important stuff and working the steps can be hard work, so we need balance in our life, and have some fun moments, with family and recovery friends.

F is for First Things First. Through working the 12 Steps, all 12, I grow in my recovery. I have a new awareness, have new experiences, and a deeper understanding of myself and my God and the world around me. As the Big Book says, we grow in the Fellowship of the Spirit.

F is for First Step Prayer

Dear Lord,
I admit that I am powerless over my addiction.
I admit that my life is unmanageable when I try to control it.
Help me this day to understand the true meaning of powerlessness.
Remove from me all denial of my addiction.
Amen.

F is for Flee. One of the acronyms for Flee everything and recover or Face everything and recover. Flee from negative people and situations. Face your fears and take a ristk and work through them one step at a time.

One of the things I have to flee from are sweets. I get a small square for dessert with my meal. Yesterday was like an apple crisp, the day before was butter tart square. There have been brownies and cake. I make chocolate chip cookies mainly for my son. I have been thinking of butterscotch oatmeal cookies, but have resisted baking them, so far it has been thought, which I haven't followed up with action.

F is for Faith

Faith is...thanking God for His gift of emotional health, not assuming it all stems from my ability to cope with life.

F is for Friends. Get phone numbers and make friends with the people in the Fellowship. We have to let go of our using friends. Many of them were more drinking buddies, than real good friends. We need to stick with the winners. Anyone who stays sober in today is a winner.

F is for F.R.O.G. Fully Relying On God. Our God is known only by us. We have a God who covers all religions. We need to be part of the whole and connect to others, whatever they believe. My God is the Creator, Master, Lord, Healer, Comforter, and so much more. He not only loves me, He forgives me, and gave me freedom of choice.

F is Forget. Forget the past, this is a brand new day. Each day is a new beginning. We can't base our today on yesterday or tomorrow. They say forgive, but don't forget. It isn't easy to forget. It always seem to be lurking around and it is hard not to pick up on it. The thought that is, not the drug. Using is not an option. That is why I say, each day is a brand new slate.

F is for Face the World. Learning to accept life on life's terms. Facing our fears. Face being alone with ourselves and not looking to Other People to validate, affirm, love, confirm, etc. what we can not find within ourselves. We need to face everything and recover. In today, I have people in my life because I want them there, not because I need them.
