Raised in the country with country family and country neighbors, life was pretty rural and simple…not easy but simple. We raised our own food, hunted and fished, and harvested our own honey from our beehives.
There was no air-conditioning, instead a huge attic fan brought cool breezes through sunny windows flung open wide. Every day there were chores to be done, and simply preparing a meal took so much time, and effort AND SKILL! At the end of a long day of chores and playing in barns and ponds and fields and trees…early to bed was a blessing for tired kiddos.
I think growing up in the country in a simple lifestyle brought me close to God at a very early age: through nature, and seeing the cycle of life and seasons first hand, and of course being in church every time the door was opened.
I don’t ever remember a time I didn’t believe there was a God but He seemed distant and disconnected to my simple life in the country. My earliest memory of praying to God and having that awe moment of “oh wow…He is REAL” was when I was in early elementary school.
My ornery big brother stole my bag of marbles. This was very distressing for me as I regularly played marbles with the neighbor kids. He proudly proclaimed that he buried them somewhere on our acreage…there were ponds and barns and fields and gardens and woods and it felt an impossible task for a little girl…
I fell to the ground weeping, wrapping my arms around my little scraggly dog, Possum. And there beneath a big oak tree, with my face buried in Possum’s fur, I prayed my very first prayer. “Lord, please let Possum dig up my bag of marbles.”
Immediately Possum left my side and ran about 15 feet away and began to dig promptly, retrieving a small leather bag containing my favorite childhood toy, MY MARBLES!! It was so powerful in that moment that I can still remember the overwhelming feeling of awe and wonder that made me turn toward heaven and exclaim, YOU ARE REAL! YOU ARE REAL! God you are real! Through that little prayer, I knew that He saw me, knew me, heard me and loved me.
