The New York Times offered some good advice when it ran an article headlined: “To Stay on Schedule, Take a Break.” When we keep our noses to the grindstone, our fingers on the keyboard, and our eyes on the screen, we gradually become less productive without frequent breaks to refresh our energy. The Times article cited a growing body of evidence showing that regular breaks make us more—not less—productive.1

We don’t need research for that, for the Gospels tell us how Jesus took regular breaks, withdrawing from the multitudes and from the work, finding solitary spots for rest and prayer.

Sometimes we need breaks from our work and even from the demands of loved ones—perhaps a fifteen-minute break, occasionally a day off, a weekend away, or a vacation. We need time to luxuriate in Bible study, prayer, exercise, and sleep. During times of pressure, it’s important to take time to retreat just as Jesus did on earth. Find a way of resting a little more during the holidays. Give yourself a little break today.
