Default Being bummed out

Most of us feel bummed out, or depressed right after we admit we're alcoholic. Knowing what to do about this is a vital part of our new found sobriety. I was told to go talk to someone newer than me and to try to offer some help to them. I was reluctant to say the least. I couldn't see how that would help me. For many of us this act of trying to help others is our first real attempt at helping ourselves. Only we don't know it, but those who came before us know that nothing works quite as well to lift us up than trying to help someone else. The whole program of recovery was based on this by someone who was bummed about not being able to drink, and it worked. Not only are we able stay sober we get that lift we need in our mood. When all else fails try to help someone else you'll be amazed at how well it works.
