Default Rest

Week in the Word

Rest
Acts 9:31

King James Version
_____________________________

Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.

In this passage of Scripture, a close look at four words provides insight and instruction for our lives.

Rest
After a time of trouble and persecution for the early disciples, there came a time of peace and rest. No matter what storms may be raging in our lives, this Scripture encourages us that a time of rest will follow.

Edified
When the believers had rest, they also were edified. During peaceful times, we have opportunity for edification (to build up, promote spiritual growth). We can develop our character, strengthen our faith, and increase our knowledge and understanding of God through the constant reading and study of His Word. We do this so that we are prepared for life's storms and to be more like Christ. We also walk in the "fear of the Lord" meaning we lead lives that are holy and pleasing to God, regardless of what others around us are doing.

Comfort
The Bible teaches us that the Holy Spirit is, among other things, our Comforter (John 14:16). As such, He combines encouragement with alleviation of grief. We can rest in the knowledge that during difficult circumstances, the Holy Spirit will encourage, comfort, and relieve us of grief.

Multiplied
In spite of the trouble and persecution that the early believers endured, during a time of rest, spiritual growth, and obedience to Christ, God multiplied (caused to increase) their numbers. Even in the midst of turmoil, God can save our friends and loved ones.

Father,

We thank you for the times of rest that follow every storm. Thank You, that Your Holy Spirit encourages, comforts, and alleves us of grief, that we may enjoy these times of rest to build up our faith and spiritual growth. We praise You in Jesus' name. Amen!
