Default In the Bad Times

God's Word For Today

In the Bad Times

Read Psalms 54:1 through 61:8

Saul was the king of Israel but David knew that he was next in line. Saul knew it, too, and intended to kill David. Saul tried on several occasions but failed. David and his men were on the run. It was a difficult time in David’s life—a time of fear and uncertainty.

At the time Psalm 57 was written, David was hiding in a cave. Saul and his army were probably not far away, perhaps closing in for the kill. David prayed.

Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed (Psalm57:1).

What a great example. Too often our response to trouble is more like, “Oh, God, what am I going to do? This could turn out badly for me. I am scared.”

We need to remember that God is with us all the time. We should enjoy His presence during times of worship, but we also need His strength and protection when we are in danger. He will help us, just like He helped David.

Prayer Suggestion: Father, help me trust You, especially in the bad times.
