Default What triggers your light?

Sisters in Christ Worldwide

If you live in an area that displays dark autumn mornings, you understand the feeling of starting your day in the dark. Soon in my area, it will be dark when we get up and dark again by late afternoon. Being a solar powered person, this really impedes my energy level. However; with the wonders of electricity and technology, I am able to complete my daily tasks without problem.

In John 11:10, we read about walking in the darkness. ‘But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him’ How often do we stumble around in our lives, searching, looking and attempting to navigate in a dark and scary world. Unlike my kitchen, my light is always there, within me. I have only to turn it on. Everything becomes clear and I can successfully continue my daily progress. Turning that inner light on…now that is not so easy. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could push a button, twist a switch or even “clap” our hands to begin the glow? What triggers your light?

I love music and there are particular songs that have the ability to switch my inner glow to high. One of those is “It is well with my soul”. If you know the story of this old hymn, you know that the author had faced countless challenges…more than I can even imagine. And then, he tragically lost his 4 children on a ship, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. His wife was saved, but these innocent souls were taken. I would have thought this might have extinguished his light…possibly forever. As he and his sick wife were returning home on another ship, the captain told him they were in the approximate spot where the other ship had gone down. Sitting in his cabin, knowing his departed children had died in this area, Horatio Spatford penned this hymn which has come to be a wonderful gift to the Christian world. I am pretty sure I would have been in the fetal position, wanting to escape and join my children. But somehow, this man was able to turn on his light.

I hope no one reading this is having to deal with such a situation, but I know many are in the dark. I truly believe that if you reach out, whether it is through music, verse, prayer or counselor, you can turn your light on again. It may start with a glimmer, but as you grow in your faith, it will continue to shine and light the world around you with the love of God, and comfort you with the glow of the Holy Spirit.

May your days be full of light…

Claudia Little

Being a Christian is more than just an instantaneous conversion – it is a daily process whereby you grow to be more and more like Christ. Billy Graham

Good Morning Lord, Again we thank you for the joy of waking and the opportunity to spend another day with You and with our family and friends. We ask that you ignite the light within us on those days when we find it so hard to shine. You are the brightest, and the steadiest light in the universe. With your help, we too can find hope and happiness with the boundaries of your will. It is well with our souls as You help us shine in our faith. Amen
