Default The Ripple Effect

The Ripple Effect

Read 1 Kings 4:1 through 6:38

Carmen was shocked as she picked up the $100 bill from the grocery store floor. She could sure use the money with Christmas coming up, but so could its owner. Carmen asked at the front desk if anyone had lost some cash. The ensuing hubbub told her all she needed to know. The young mother was elated to recover her money, and the news of a kind, honest person spread like a pond ripple through the community.

King Hiram of Tyre had watched his friend David’s rebellious heirs with trepidation. When David died, would peace continue between their countries? One can almost hear his sigh of relief as he discovered that God provided Solomon, David’s “wise son to rule over this great nation” (1 Kings 5:7). Now Hiram knew that his country would continue to enjoy the blessing of being neighbors to David’s family.

Did Carmen realize that her choice to return the money would encourage a community? Did Solomon recognize that his ongoing daily choices to serve the Lord would bless not only himself, but also other nations? Do we realize that our choices in serving God have a ripple effect on those around us?

Prayer for Today: Lord, please help me to be aware that my life affects people I don’t even know.

Quicklook: 1 Kings 5:1–7 God's Word For Today
