FALSE GODS

There are some people who would be completely destroyed if they lost their jobs. There are others who would admit they wouldn’t know what to do if they lost all their possessions or money. Sometimes we get so involved and dependent on the things of the world that, without realizing it, we begin worshiping these others gods and putting them in God’s place. When we think there is some worldly thing we can’t live without, then maybe it’s time we let it go and put God back in first place in our lives. Only God’s truth can give us the peace we need. Nothing on earth can fill the place in our lives that He can.

Psalm 81:9 “You must never have a foreign god; you must not bow down before a false god.” (NLT)

Psalm 81:9 “There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.” (KJV)

Dear Lord, we know You are all we need yet we continue to look to the things of the world for happiness and contentment. We know when we put these worldly things first in our lives, there is no room for You. Help us to turn from those worldly things and turn back to You. We want to put You first, worship only You and live as You have called us to live. False gods will only lead us away from You. We want to draw close to You. Help us, O God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

We can’t have the things of the world and God both in first place in our lives. There is no room.

With God first in our lives, we will realize the things of the world can’t do what He can.

False gods are anything we put in first place in our lives other than God.

Depending on anything other than God will give the devil a foothold in our lives.

When we worship the things of the world, we turn our backs on God.

Jonah 2:8 “Those who worship false gods turn their backs on all God’s mercies.” (NLT)

1 John 5:21 “Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.” (NLT)

Focus: Take inventory of what we put first in our lives and be sure God is the only one in that spot.
