February 16

The Mirror
One looks in the mirror to powder, shave, or admire. But the good AA is apt to look deeper.
Every morning he gives thanks for a sober countenance, he asks forgiveness for lingering resentment,
he hopes for grace to live the coming day well. At nightfall he takes another look, saying,
"Well, my friend, how did we do today? Thanks be to thee for the privilege of living."
Thus the AA's mirror reflects not rouge, but gratitude; not conceit, but humility; not froth, but reality.
It reflects a priceless experience.

accomplishment. Without that, nothing could have happened.
We agnostics and atheists were sticking to the idea that self-sufficiency would solve our problems. When others
showed us that God-sufficiency worked with them, we began to feel like those who had insisted the Wrights would never
fly. We were seeing another kind of flight, a spiritual liberation from this world, people who rose above their problems.

Responsibilities
Remember, AA is not going to preserve itself automatically.
What are we, each one of us, doing with the gift of sobriety, so freely and lovingly given?
Will we squander our magnificent inheritance? Perhaps each one of us should hold on to these thoughts:

The only time that wrong can prevail is when good people do nothing."

When a drunk has a terrific hangover because he drank heavily yesterday, he cannot live well today. But there is another
kind of hangover which we all experience whether we are drinking or not. That is the emotional hangover, the direct

If we would live serenely today and tomorrow, we certainly need to eliminate these hangovers. This doesn't mean we

Emotional Sobriety
If we examine every disturbance we have, great or small, we will find at the root of it some unhealthy dependency
and its consequent unhealthy demand.
Let us, with God's help, continually surrender these hobbling demands.
Then we can be set free to live and love; we may be able to Twelfth Step ourselves and others into emotional sobriety.

Renewal
I have a new outlook on life.
I look forward to each day with happiness because of the real enjoyment it is to me to be sane, sober, and respectable.

My acquaintance with God -- lost and forgotten when I was a young man -- is renewed.

A.A.: Benign Anarchy and Democracy
When we come into A.A. we find a greater personal freedom than any other society knows. We cannot be compelled to
do anything. In that sense our Society is a benign anarchy. The word 'anarchy' has a bad meaning to most of us. But I
think that the idealist who first advocated the concept felt that if only men were granted absolute liberty, and were
compelled to obey no one, they would then voluntarily associate themselves in the common interest. A.A. is an

By implication they ask each of us to lay aside pride and resentment. They ask for personal as well as group sacrifice.
They ask us never to use the AA name in any quest for personal power or distinction or money.
The Traditions guarantee the equality of all members and independence of all groups.
They show how we may best relate ourselves to each other and to the world outside.

Results
I had to admit that AA showed results, prodigious results.
I saw that my attitude regarding these had been anything but scientific. It wasn't AA that had the closed mind, it was me.
The minute I stopped arguing, I could begin to see and feel. . .
I can't say upon occasion or upon what day I came to believe in a Power greater than myself, but I certainly have that belief now.
To acquire it, I had only to stop fighting and practice the rest of AA's program as enthusiastically as I could.

Generation Gap
I walked into my first AA meeting a month after my 70th birthday. . . Half-sober, I got myself to an AA meeting near my home.
My first reaction, as I stared at the people in the meeting was to flee. Unwittingly, I had walked into a young people's meeting.
The leader, a girl named Kathy, was fourteen and one-half years old, with six months' sober.
Muttering, I turned toward the exit and found myself face to face with a young man, who stuck out a hand.
"My name is Frank." "I'm not staying. I'm in the wrong place." He got a whiff of my breath. "I'd say you aren't."
That evening, I learned that the generation gap works both ways.
While I had as much chance for recovery as a girl of 14, she was as likely to die from alcoholism as I was.

It is very easy to use other people's actions as an alibi for drinking. We used to be experts at it.
But in sobriety, we have learned a new technique:
We never let ourselves get so resentful toward someone else that we allow that person to control our lives --
especially to the extent of causing us to drink.
We have found we have no desire to let any other person run, or ruin, our lives.

A Healthy Respect
Fear may have originally pushed some of us toward looking into the possibility that we may have a drinking problem.
And over a short period, fear alone may help some of us stay away from a drink.
But a fearful state is not a very happy or relaxed one to maintain for very long.
So we try to develop a healthy respect for the power of alcohol, instead of a fear of it,
just as people have a healthy respect for cyanide, iodine, or any other poison.

Meetings
A "spiritual experience" to me meant attending meetings,
seeing a group of people,
all there for the purpose of helping each other;
hearing the Twelve Steps
and the Twelve Traditions read at a meeting,
and hearing the Lord's Prayer,
which in an AA meeting has such great meaning --
"Thy will be done, not mine."
A spiritual awakening soon came to mean
trying each day to be a little more thoughtful,
more considerate, a little more courteous
to those with whom I came in contact.
