Default Learning to Listen

God's Word For Today

Learning to Listen

Read Isaiah 50:1 through 53:12

The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed (Isaiah 50:4).

Whether the prophet Isaiah was speaking of himself or of Christ, as disciples of Christ we can put ourselves in this verse. If we want to learn and speak the language of encouragement, we can claim this verse as though it were spoken directly to us.

It is said the first rule in learning a new language doesn’t involve speaking so much as listening: Listen first, then speak. If we want to learn to speak words of comfort to people who wear a weary smile, or no smile at all, we will want to begin by listening to our instructor—the Holy Spirit—who is well-versed in the languages of the heart.

We will also feel more comfortable expressing phrases such as, “God will help you,” God is for you,” and “God’s grace is sufficient,” as we learn to listen to His heart as well as to the heart-cries of others.

Prayer Suggestion: Ask God to help you learn the language of encouragement.

Quicklook: Isaiah 50:4–7

We stay sober and clean together - one day at a time!
