OBSESSIONS AND ADDICTIONS

We all have obsessions or addictions. Some of us like to spend money. Some of us eat too much. Some of us may be addicted to drugs or alcohol. God understands we are tempted by the things of the world and sometimes those temptations can be addicting. God understands when we spend money, eat too much or reach for those pills or bottles, we are seeking some kind of comfort. God understands why and He wants to help. Rather than deal with our obsessions or addictions, let’s give them to God so He can help us. Next time we want to do whatever we are addicted to, let’s reach out to God. He understands.

Romans 8:26 “And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.” (NLT)

Dear Lord, we need You. We have issues where we are obsessed or addicted to something and we can’t shake it. We reach out for these things because they make us feel good temporarily. Help us to stop the addictions. Help us to reach out for You. Remind us when we are weak, You are strong. We need You. Help us today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

What things are you addicted to and how can you replace your desires for those things with the good things God has for you?

God’s plan for us is not to become a slave to something or someone or earth. He wants us to devote ourselves to Him.

Addictions can tear us down. They can break up relationships. They can move us away from God.

Those temporary good feelings we get from what we are addicted to will soon pass. That’s why we need God and not what we are addicted to.

If we have doubts about something we are doing thinking it is not right to do it, then we need to stop doing it.

Romans 14:23 “But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.” (NLT)

Focus: Remember God understands we are weak and we need Him. It’s okay to go to Him for help when we need it.
