“It happened after this that Nahash the king of the people of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his place. Then David said, ‘I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash because his father showed kindness to me.’ So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came to Hanun in the land of the people of Ammon to comfort him.” 1 Chronicles 19:1-2.

In the same way, because of the new covenant with God the Father, Jesus Christ sends messengers and angels to comfort us. And they will come to us where we are.

Whenever God sends a person or His Holy Spirit to do a good thing for us, we must be sensitive enough to recognize it. The people of Ammon were so dense and full of fear and suspicion that they could not discern a good thing…even when it was right in front of them.

“And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun, ‘Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Did his servants not come to you to search out and overthrow and to spy out the land?’” (v. 19:3)

Have you ever felt moved to do something good for someone – and have them totally reject you? Has God ever set something good before you, and out of distrust, skepticism and doubt, you blow it? Thank God for His grace.

The people of Ammon really blew it.

“And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun, ‘Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Did his servants not come to you to search out and overthrow and to spy out the land?’” (v. 19:3) [emphasis mine]

These 3 verses are really about warfare. Notice the terminology – David is a picture of God and His kingdom. God reaches out to a far country because of covenant with their fathers, and sends comforters and messengers to them.

But the princes (remember Jesus refers to the devil as the prince of this age) whisper evil doubts into the king’s ear…and he gives way to the evil seed they plant in his heart.

Many of us are like Hanun the king right now. God has sent us His Comforter and even people as messengers to comfort us and bless us, and the devil is saying, “Does God really honor His covenant with you? He has sent this trial to overthrow you and destroy you, not to help you!”

In all of our trials, may we hear the voice of the Shepherd, who brings grace, peace, comfort, and trust. May we act on His voice alone, and not the voice of another. Stand strong this week…

Lord, I pray that You help me to always hear Your voice in all my trials and tribulations. Give me discernment to know that it is You and help me trust in Your guidance and Your wisdom. Amen.
